The History of The Bow And Arrow
The bow and arrow has a torrid history of being the first weapon of mass destruction. However, before its destructive history these instruments were used as a means of helping individuals to survive. The past of these weapons is one filled with great uses and one filled with great destruction. Learning all about these sporting devices can help a person have a better appreciation for the sport of archery and possibly even bow hunting.
One of the most unique things that a person may not realize about the bow and arrow is that it was not used as a machine of war until the compound bow was created around 1500 B.C. on the steppes of Central Asia. This was when the weapon went from being one of providing food to one could shape the outcome of wars being fought at that time. A compound bow is one that is created of various materials including bone, sinew, and wood to increase the elasticity and natural strength allowing for the arrow to go farther and hopefully straighter than its counterparts.
After the compound bow came the crossbow and the longbow. These were used in China, Rome, and as far away as in England. Many people were killed using these weapons, but they also provided a way for huge civilizations such as the Roman Empire to become mass conquerors and stay that way for long periods of time. Once that gunpowder was created, however, the use of the bow and arrows became limited. In today's society, they are now viewed as being an essential part for a hunter that has the hobby of deer hunting. They can also be found in various forms of archery that even Olympics have now seen as being a very competitive sport.
Having a bow and arrow lying around can come in handy if one is looking to start their journey on the world of archery or hunting. However, the bow and its arrow companions have a history that is very colorful. Yes, it was once used as a means of warfare but that has changed in present times. No matter if a person uses the bow and arrows for sport or hunting they will be using something that has been around for longer than almost anything else on this planet.
